A dream come true

I have wanted to visit the Greek islands for as long as I can remember. When we were living in France, we visited Athens because Lucie was crazy about Greek history and that was amazing, but the islands continued to call to me. Bucky and I talked about going for my 40th birthday, but timing wasn't right. We thought we would go for my 50th birthday since we were in Barcelona, but the travel plans were complicated and our girls were not available to go with us and the real dream was for all four Walls to be there together.

This summer we made it happen and I am so happy that we did! Lucie came to Barcelona a couple of days early and then Bucky, Lucie and I flew to Santorini. We arrived at the crack of dawn and took a ferry to our home for the next week, the magical island of Milos. The first place on Milos we stayed was a fisherman's house right on the sea in the tiny village of Klima. There is one road into and out of Klima and we traveled on it a number of times that first day because we went to pick Kathleen up from the island airport!

We decided to lounge around the first couple of days and enjoy the quaintness of Klima. We strolled along the water, lounged on the terrace, took pictures, sunbathed and ate and drank. It was lovely. Near to where we were staying is where the Venus de Milo was discovered so we did venture out to see that and visit an ancient amphitheater. Both were pretty spectacular.

Our second Airbnb was in the town of Pollonia which is still considered small but has lots of restaurants and shops. The house we rented was again right on the water, this time on a rocky beach with lots of different coves to explore. We took advantage of our rental car and explored the island visiting some of the most spectacular beaches on the island. There were a couple we tried to go to, but the trek to them (think steep cliffs and ropes) were too treacherous so opted for more tame ones!

I won't even try to describe the places we visited because I won't be able to do them justice, but you can see them for yourselves in the photos below. Kathleen had to head back to NYC for work a couple of days early and after she left, Bucky, Lucie and I took the ferry from Pollonia to the island of Kimolos. It was spectacular. There was virtually no one on the island and we had an entire beach to ourselves. We also enjoyed one of our favorite meals of the entire trip here!

Who knew that Greek food was so delicious? It was amazing. Lots of fish, meat for the others, salads were amazing and the cheese was unbelievable. We tried every grilled, fried and pastry encrusted cheese option on every menu! Of course, we washed everything down with rose and even a bit of ouzo!

Since we were flying back to Barcelona from Santorini, we made plans to spend a couple of days on this more populated island. We opted for an Airbnb on the eastern side of the island in a resort town called Kamari, where the beaches are black! We spent a wonderful, and very HOT day, in the town of Oia which was teeming with tourists. It was gorgeous and we had fun, but we were overwhelmed with tourists! We were happy to go back to Kamari to sleep!

We made my dream come true and I couldn't be happier. We made memories that will last a lifetime. I may go back to Milos someday, but this trip was a once in a lifetime thing and I feel so fortunate that we were able to do it! Enjoy some of our adventure below!

The black sands of Kamari.

The white buildings of Oia were like in the movies!

Seafood anyone?

We walked down from Oia to this swimming spot and were so hot! Getting into and out of the rocky cove was not my favorite thing, but I am glad I did it. Lucie is wearing by beach cover-up as a skirt because she fell down on her way down the hill and ripped her shorts! It was quite the adventure!

I look so short in this picture!

My love and me!

I felt like I was the only one on Kimolos!

This beach was a "secret" cove!

There was a little neighborhood on the water by the "secret" cove.

Another pic of the neighborhood! Can you imagine living here?

Another amazing meal with my family!

This was at a beach that is all white rock. It was super cool! It was like we were on the moon1

  1. Wonderful trip! The sun-dappled taverna photo makes me want to be there. We're aiming for a family trip in the next couple of years. Love the idea of the fisherman's house.
